State Keeps Custody In Baby Hitler Case

Updated: Tuesday, 22 Nov 2011, 5:49 AM EST

FLEMINGTON, N.J. - A family court hearing in Flemington, N.J., ended on Monday with Heath and Deborah Campbell, the parents in the Baby Hitler case, unable to bring home their newborn child. Three other children with Neo-Nazi names remain in state care.

Heath Campbell and Deborah Campbell were seeking to regain custody of five-day-old son Hons, whom the Campbells said was taken by New Jersey child-care officials last Thursday, after Deborah Campbell gave birth at a local hospital.

It was unclear if the hearing involved the couple's three other children, who have been in foster care since 2009. They are named Adolf Hitler Campbell, JoyceLynn Aryan Nation Campbell and Honszlynn Hinler Jeannie Campbell.

The Campbells made national headlines in 2009 when a grocery store wouldn't put the name of their son, Adolf Hitler Campbell, on a birthday cake.

The couple claims they lost custody of baby Adolf, and the two other children, because of the Nazi origin of their names. Now, a fourth child is in state custody.

Monday's hearing was closed to the public, but Heath Campbell spoke briefly with a news crew from Fox on the way into the hearing.

Heath Campbell told us that baby Hons is still at the hospital but the couple can’t see the child.

“They kidnapped my kid,” Campbell said. “I’ve been sleeping with his little blanket from the hospital.”

CoH, please.

The parents have the right to name their kids as they choose, but on the other hand, the outcome is predictably bad once those kids hit the playgrounds. They'll be targets. But we have other examples of say, celebrities, naming their kids all kinds of crazy things who never face these consequences.

If the parents are doing everything else as rightly as anyone can do, then the state really doesn't have any grounds to keep these kids in foster homes.

So a real solution might be for the state to take the parents' NAMING rights away, order them to change the kids' names for the kids' own safety, and reunite the family. The parents should be able to agree to that for the sake of their kids - now, to bring them home, and later, as the children grow up. Send the parents to some counseling so they understand the ramifications of these actions. All that is better for the family, and cheaper for the state. This doesn't have to be what it is. And 33 months in foster care, barring some kind of egregious abuse, is outside the parameters of federal rules. If the state keeps dragging this out, these little kids will go back to their parents, but these kids won't even know their parents. That's cruel, too.

If there's more to this than just the names and that guy's tattoo on his neck, then the state needs to come out and say it.

I don't like Nazis. Especially ones with Swastikas on their neck.(seriously, how many time does this douche nut get punched in the face while riding the bus or subway?)

I am feeling terribly sorry for the children. I hope they manage to grow up in a healthy, safe environment.

I feel the same way, Diego, but there's an issue of rights here. And frankly, those kids' rights are being violated by the state when they can't live in their own family setting. If this had been anything other than Nazi references, there'd be no issue. The parents need to get a grip on reality about this naming thing, rights or not, and thing about their children's overall futures. But our foster care system isn't the greatest, either.

Agreed.

I wonder if there are grounds for finding the Parents(at least the father, mentally incompetent?)

I realize that the Nazi thing pushes buttons above and beyond many other issues. I would say that the safety of the children is at risk because of the image and persona that father is taking on. Sad. Kids always suffer from the actions of irresponsible adults.

I don't think the state should ever give these kids back. If these two d-bags are stupid enough to give their kids Nazi names, how much of a positive influence do you think they will be on these kids lives?

Not a Nazi, please. With a swastika on his neck rocking the Hitler mustache, this guy is really stupid.

As a parent you have the right to name your kids whatever. But, these idiots have ruined these kids' lives forever. Imagine putting Adolf Hitler on your resume or college application. That poor kid is screwed for life, and these parents are to blame.

Allowing the state to take children away based on the name of the child can set a precedent that can come back to bite us all later. It shouldn't matter what the name is. We don't have to agree with someone else's childs name or approve in any way. If he hadn't named his children nazi names we would all be marching, writing our government, etc. fighting for his rights regardless of weather he named his kids apple or orange or grape. But we dont take children away from parents who name their children after their grandfather who may be in prison etc. So how can we tell someone they cant name their child after Hitler? We don't have to agree with it, but if we cant throw the parent in jail for it we shouldnt be able to take their children away for it.
