COLUMBUS, Ohio — The garage door at Jim Tressel's home is up. His two tiny dogs run across his perfectly manicured lawn, their white fur a blur. The man working in front of the home says, yes sir, coach is home.
But Jim Tressel's place of refuge — like his career and the football team he once led — has changed with the things that have been lost: The trust, his reputation and Ohio State's sense of unblemished accomplishment.
Perhaps that's why he doesn't answer the door. Why he stays inside, possibly peering through the security camera at the questions outside, ignoring the sounds of the doorbell ringing, ignoring the sounds of the gold-colored knocker that reads "The Tressels" as it bangs a call to the owner to come forth and talk.
